Vissen cylinder by Jonas Olsson on Uddenskulptur 2021
‘Fainted Cylinder’
The sculpture is part of a series of works Jonas has worked with since 2016. The series is based on a technique he invented during his master’s degree in Metal Design at HDK-Valand Steneby. It is based on a kind of press tool that Jonas has built, 8 m long and 180 cm wide. It is built to make it possible to compress different types of large steel pipes lengthwise. In order for it to be possible to compress steel in that way, it must be heated to a temperature of about 1100-1200 degrees (until it gets a yellow color). To get an even heat around the pipe, he has also specially built a cylindrical mobile propane oven that is mounted around the pipe where he wants it to be compressed.
The way the metal moves when it is compressed according to this method gives it an expression that becomes organic and it is easy to draw parallels to a living body. The pipe is also carefully welded so that it creates the illusion of being solid. The plant’s surface is completely untreated if one disregards the heat treatment it received during the manufacturing process.
During the exhibition, the surface will change. It will be affected by the salt from the marine environment, rusting and gradually adopting a reddish-brown color.
