The Bend, a work in progress by Roland Höft on Uddenskulptur 2026
THE BEND
a work in progress
Roland Höft is a graduate sculptor who has been working as a freelance artist since 1995.
His background is in classical figurative sculpture, but he has been working with abstract forms since 2007. The basic concept behind his sculptures is the “architectural form of memory”. His works capture the architectural structures of the environment and transform them into a reduced sculptural concept.
Inspired by nature, human forms and architectural lines, he creates emotive architectural sculptures. These works create and provide space, emotion and memory, engaging in a dialogue with the viewer and the environment. His preferred medium is stone. As a professional artist, he creates sculptures for private and public spaces worldwide.
Since the year 2020, he has also been working on the theme of “bending instead of breaking”. These sculptures are created in a visual language of material contradiction. The characteristics of metal deformation are translated into stone sculptures. The illusion of bending marble gives rise to a “diverse sculpture”, beyond the presumed reality. The viewer’s perceptual patterns are disrupted and rearranged, creating a new visual language.
Roland works at Konstnärarnas Kollektivverkstad Bohuslän from 23-March untill 19-th of April. You can follow his work in progress here
He describes his sculpture like this.
Title: “The Bend”
This sculptural concept is a curved line that that ends in a columnar form. The resulting figurative form symbolises strength and resilience.
The tension and contradiction open up new perspectives on form, stability and movement that transcend perceived reality.
The sculpture will be made using an angle grinder and hand tools. The edges of the guide lines will be polished to provide a contrast to the rough surface and support the force of the bend.
