Uddenskulptur 2021

Liesbeth Henderickx and Kasper De Vos got to know each other during their sculpture training at the Kask in Ghent. They both followed a postgraduate course at the HISK. Kasper is represented by the Antwerp Galerie Plus-One, Liesbeth by Galerie Fred and Ferry.

My work is approached from a sculptural medium. Concrete and natural stone are the main materials that give shape to my sculptures, sometimes through collaboration but often in relation to their position within the history of architecture.

My facination runs through both the ideals of architectural modernism and ideas about how we can reconnect architecture and everyday life with our immediate surroundings. It is a search for the values, meaning and origin of certain materials present in the urban landscape.

A landscape that is constantly subject to physical changes as a result of fleeting and architectural trends. And thus have lost their relationship with the energy emanating from tangible matter.

My work is based on the consciousness of matter and is often a play of the visible and the invisible. In physical states that confuse ‘stillness’ and ‘movement’.

The focus on form is more organic, relating to matter as it exists in and through systems.

My language is plastic and narrative in nature and is determined by materiality, form and colour. The work arises from the pleasure of making, finding, touching, imagination and the experience of looking.

Ideas arise organically and grow in meaning through time and space. Recurring subjects are nature, architecture, figuration and food. These motives help me to reflect on the alienation of relations and connections between nature, (local) culture and consumerism.

By playing with scale, tradition, seduction and tactility. I make concrete and legible sculptures that communicate directly through magnification, imitation and humour. At the same time, these sculptures harbour the possibility of being read more deeply in search of fundamental truths.

On the other hand, I make loose stacks and connections of and with found materials and objects, organically selected on the basis of colour form and origin.

These sculptures, which mostly focus vertically, become part of a mysterious poetic theatre.

In addition, there is a small series of larger installations in which a production/consumption process is linked to an artistic context in which I navigate.
